Top Yard Sale Tips

If you advertise, they will come.  Put up straight-forward, direct and readable signs around the neighborhood.   You could post an ad on craigslist or in the newspaper, but I would only recommend that if you have an enormous amount of stuff to sell.

There is nothing worse than scrambling through your wallet to try to find change for the first person that walks up and wants a $0.50 item but only has a $20. Get a bunch of ones, fives and a roll each of quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies.

Make things easy, accessible and enjoyable for customers, but they are strangers, so don’t make them too comfortable. Items should be clean, organized, with highly visible prices on them. If you’re selling electronics have an outdoor outlet or a long extension cord so people can test out the items. Never invite a stranger into your home to try out a toaster, find change or use the bathroom. As I tell my kids, you can’t tell a good stranger from a bad so be careful with them all.
